I like that it clears up cap space. He's a solid bottom six guy on the Flames roster but that cap hit was too high.

There are some guys with Stockton that are having solid years, like Quine who can fill the role.

I wonder if his dad was in town yesterday? Would be kind of awkward if he was.

Given no salary was retained by the Flames the return is much more than a low % lottery ticket Todd.
The Leafs gave Carolina a 1st to eat a year (6.25) of Patrick Marleau so the Sabres eating half of 4.3 is worth something on top of the 4th.

Frolik was a good soldier and a positive influence for most of his time here, but it was obvious that he was overpaid for what he brought when played in the position that he was in. Looch is our overpaid guy and we don't need more bottom-sixers sucking salary. Which is why Janko and Bennett should be shopped around.

Treliving made a smart move on this one, even managing a bonus draft pick that could be tossed into a later deal.

I'll thank Frolik for his time here, but it was time to move on.

Also Todd Elliott Friedman mentioned about unhappy players not getting ice time in his 31 thoughts, no secret Frolik wants more minutes so he can showcase for a new contract with other teams. You can get into all the stats you want but if the dressing room is becoming an issue, it's time to go.

Surprised we got anything. I would of done it without the 4th...thank god im not a gm.

I have a feeling it’s going to help make space for Toffoli or Kreider and that’s a huge improvement over Frolik.

The boys were talking about Hoffman possibly as well.

Really want a right shot but I’d take Kreider over Toffoli. Not sure I’d want to give up what Florida is going to want for Hoffman.

Carrying this over from the last thread:

Fair enough but from my take the Flames are not built to play heavy playoff hockey for 2 months so why trade one of the few guys who can bring that unless you dont think its your year.
Benny was our best player in 2017 when we got swept by the ducks too.

Agreed - I think that's a separate argument - I think they have physical guys, Looch, Chucky, Rinaldo, Hanifin and Lindholm have been stepping it up. Hell, even Mony is starting to show a more physical style of play as of late. I like Bennett, I don't love him and I think he's basically Hathaway with more skill - when he feels like it.

Go get a Reaves if you need another heavy guy, but the Flames first line was also totally shut down in that first round. Spreading the offense can only help things and we're seeing some of that with the line changes recently. If you could roll out:

Chucky Lindy Hoffman
Mangy Mony Johnny
Dube Backs Ryan
Rinaldo/Janko Rieder Looch

You're probably better off in a bunch of different ways. Gets Backs down to a shutdown role with more skill on his wings, leaves you with a heavy 4th line, the first 2 lines are well balanced with Chucky/Mangy playing the harder roles with skill guys like Hoff and Johnny playing in space...

Its not that I dont like Hoffman in fact I do. I just think if were trading for a UFA its with this year and the playoffs in mind and I want Bennett in my top 9 and playing 12-15 minutes a night if were in the playoffs. Comparing Bennett to Reeves is an apple and an orange.

I'd be good with any of the three personally. Would also go knocking around for:

Columbus - Bjorkstrand
Nashville - Granlund, Hamhuis (#7/8 dman)
Chicago - Zack Smith (salary retained) - straight up for Janko?
Anaheim - Sliferberg (signed long term)
Montreal - the annual Dale Weise trade...

Not that any/all of those guys would be made available, but worth a knock if the Flames are looking to make some playoff noise

Agreed, but if all you're looking for is heavy play in the playoffs, Reaves can deliver to that end as well. Rather have the first 3 lines I put up than rock Bennett in my top 9 is all. I think it's a better playoff mix where you can play with and against different styles more easily.

I actually think Looch/Rinaldo more than solves the physical brand of playoff hockey, so I think Reaves is redundant at this point anyways.

Please put that plug Lucic on 4th line and off power play !!! Toffoli or Kreider would be sweet but price be to high i think Jankowski needs more minutes so does benny but only so many to go around

Janko is only going to find more minutes on another roster. He's not displacing Ryan on the 3rd line, and he's been barely noticeable all year. Best thing he could for his game right now is make a difference in a non-scoring capacity - ie. start playing with some energy and use his 6'4", 205 lbs frame for some good...

Agreed it is time to cut the Janko cord if there is a deal out there. Get another pick in the pocket for the trade deadline.
It might be time to give Gawdin a cameo.

Yup, Gawdin, Phlp or Philips. Of the 3, Gawdin's the most likely for a prolonged look this year, I think the other two see some opportunity out of camp next year.

Robinson's also had a pretty productive year, big frame right shot. Pretty consistent in the AHL, so might be a bit of a feel good story there for him to get a few games at some point. 6-6 232...

Neither are Rinaldo, Rieder or (arguably) Janko... but these guys have their time and place.

Scratch Weise, hadn't realized how little he's played this year...whoopsie

Smith is a guy that can at least handle 4th line minutes, plays a physical role and has historically handled himself ably in the dot - precious commodity in the playoffs.

I'm sure he will, you could say the same about Paul Byron... but he wasn't going to get the minutes that he's getting in Mtl by staying in Calgary.

Janko will be a fine #3 centre at some point in his career. Just don't think the Flames are long for him and it seems mutual when you watch the guy play. His give an eff meter is broken.

Only time will tell but I dont see Janko as much more than a PK player anymore.
I honestly dont know much about Gawdin and the stats available on players in the AHL are not that good.
Does he play on the PK?
What is his faceoffs %?
AHL production doesnt make you an NHL player but I am intrigued.

We have some great prospects but if we call them up and bury on 3 or 4 th lines playing under 0 min they wont produce anymore than Jankowski Dube or Bennett for that matter these guys never got extended looks on top two lines except Dube but even then no way that idiot Lucic should be getting more minutes

Meh, it's not uncommon with rookies to see sheltered minutes. Janko's issue was never the amount of time he was seeing, it's that he isn't productive enough with the time he's given.
